CULTURAL

The University of Toronto's Scarborough Campus is housed in the the most beautiful of natural settings with extensive trails through the Highland Creek Valley to meet the esthetic and recreational as well as the intellectual needs of its students. The cement structure of the campus makes it one of the most architecturally unique colleges in the country.

Cedar Ridge Creative Centre is the artistic force in the area. Beautifully situated high on the banks of the Highland Creek over looking the Scarborough Golf Club, its many floral gardens are a favourite for bridal photographers and gardeners alike. Here West Hill's artistic community gets to enrich its creative juices in oil and water colour painting, weaving, crafts, pottery, sculpture, woodcarving and stained glass. Built in 1912 as a family summer home, it is surrounded by 12 acres of scenic gardens and woods. The main building's library, living room, dining room and solarium is now Gallery space. The remaining areas consist of studio space where classes are held in Fine Art, Folk Art, Pottery, Fibre Art and Woodcarving. Every year more than 1,000 adults enjoy the benefits of the low student/teacher ratio and the highly qualified instructors. Hundreds of children attend the camps and classes at Cedar Ridge.

The residence was originally named "Uplands" and was constructed in 1912 for the Charles Cummings family. The property was then purchased by John C. Fraser, a Toronto financier, in 1927. The Frasers renamed the house "Cedar Ridge" and developed the extensive gardens near the main house. The original Cedar Ridge estate included a 5-room gardener's cottage and a three bay garage with stables referred to as the carriage house. Fusion, The Ontario Clay and Glass Association, now occupies the cottage.. The Frasers rebuilt the carriage house after the original structure burned down in 1930 and it became the home of Mr. Joseph French, the chauffeur for the Frasers for 48 years. The City of Scarborough (now the city of Toronto) acquired the property in 1976 and in 1995, the carriage house was completely restored and renovated to expand the studio facilities at Cedar Ridge.
